My First Pride Event as Holly: The Joy of Showing Your Authentic Self to the World
By Holly Monroe
There are moments in life that stay with you forever.
The first time you ride a bicycle.
The first time you fall in love.
The first time you achieve a dream you’ve carried in your heart for years.
And for many crossdressers, one of those unforgettable moments is attending your very first Pride event dressed as your authentic self.
If you’ve never experienced it, it’s difficult to describe the mixture of excitement, anticipation, nervousness, and pure joy that comes with preparing for your first Pride outing.
For years, many of us dream about it.
We admire beautiful dresses online. We practice our makeup. We try on outfits in front of the mirror. We imagine what it would feel like to walk confidently through the world as the feminine version of ourselves that has lived quietly inside us for so long.
Yet fear often keeps us hidden.
“What will people think?”
“Will I fit in?”
“What if someone recognizes me?”
“What if I don’t look feminine enough?”
These questions are completely normal.
Almost every crossdresser who has ventured out for the first time has asked them.
Then Pride Month arrives.
Suddenly there is an opportunity unlike any other.
Pride is a celebration of authenticity, individuality, acceptance, and self-expression. It is one of the few places where people are encouraged to be exactly who they are without apology.
For a first-time crossdresser, that can be incredibly empowering.
I remember imagining the perfect outfit.
Would it be a pretty summer dress?
A colorful skirt?
A pair of cute heels?
Maybe a touch of pink to honor the side of myself that had been waiting patiently for her chance to shine.
The outfit almost doesn’t matter.
What matters is what the outfit represents.
Freedom.
The moment you step outside your front door dressed as your authentic self, something changes. You stop imagining what it might be like and start living it.
At first, your heart races.
You notice every glance.
You become aware of every step.
You wonder if everyone is looking at you.
Then something wonderful happens.
You begin to relax.
You see smiles.
You receive compliments.
You meet people who understand your journey.
You realize that most people are simply happy to see someone expressing themselves and having fun.
The fear that once felt enormous begins to shrink.
In its place grows confidence.
One of the greatest surprises of attending Pride as a crossdresser is discovering that you are not alone.
For years many of us believe we are the only ones with these feelings.
Then we arrive at Pride and find a vibrant community of people celebrating individuality in all its forms.
Some are crossdressers.
Some are transgender.
Some are allies.
Some are simply people who believe everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves.
Together they create an atmosphere that feels welcoming, joyful, and inspiring.
The real magic of Pride isn’t the parades, music, or colorful outfits.
The real magic is self-acceptance.
It’s looking around and realizing that the person you’ve been afraid to show the world is actually someone worth celebrating.
It’s understanding that authenticity is not something to hide.
It’s something to embrace.
If this June is the month you’re considering attending your first Pride event as your feminine self, my advice is simple:
Be kind to yourself.
Choose an outfit that makes you smile.
Don’t worry about being perfect.
Don’t compare yourself to anyone else.
Remember that confidence grows through experience, not perfection.
Most importantly, enjoy the moment.
Take photos.
Make memories.
Meet new friends.
Celebrate your journey.
Years from now, you probably won’t remember whether your makeup was flawless or whether your dress was perfectly coordinated.
What you’ll remember is how it felt.
The excitement.
The freedom.
The happiness.
The incredible feeling of finally showing your authentic self to the world.
And who knows?
That first Pride event may be the beginning of a beautiful new chapter in your life.
Happy Pride Month, my beautiful friends.
May this be the year you discover just how wonderful it feels to be unapologetically yourself.
With love,
Holly Monroe ππ
